Orienteering

This fall, Kinex Academy is offering three levels and types of orienteering and a special Adventure race of orienteering strategies and techniques.

Introduction to Urban Orienteering: Introduction to map and compass use for navigation. This program teaches basics of map use and compass orientation. Second half of course tests new skills with a challenging point-to-point orienteering race.

This course is for children and youth grades 4-8. During 2.5 hours of "classroom” instruction in an outdoor setting your child will:

  • Gain understanding of maps and basic map reading skills
  • Learn compass components and use
  • Experience the thrill of finding their way using a map and a compass by participating in a number of different orienteering activities and  exercises 

2.5 hours

Fee: $ 40.00 per child, additional sibling $30.00

Intermediate Techniques and Strategies for Orienteering in Local Parks:  If your child has previously received their Kinex Urban Orienteering Certificate or has an understanding of how to use a map and compass then he or she is ready to take the next step. In this class your child will:

  • Review the basics of orienteering
  • Have a more detailed look at route planning
  • Learn the most important orienteering techniques
  • Move onto the course ito practice the orienteering skills required to comfortably participate in orienteering, outdoor navigation and ultimate outdoor adventure challenges at a medium skill level.

3.5 hours

Fee: $60.00 per child additional sibling $40.00

 (If combined with Introduction to Orienteering Session, $80.00 with the fee for an additional sibling of $60.00).

Advanced Wilderness Orienteering: Does your child love exploring the outdoors and discovering cool fun places? This program takes children on guided orienteering adventure challenges on Mount Tam, Ring Mountain, Blithedale Canyon and Tennesse Valley. Your child will enjoy the nature with more confidence by having the right skills to find his or her way in the wilderness using maps and a compass.

Upon completion, your child will have a clear understanding of the sport of orienteering with the necessary map and compass skills to explore the Mount Tamalpias, Ring Mountain, Tennesse Valley and Blithedale Cayon outdoors and participate in an orienteering event, or Ultimate Outdoor Adventure Race.

Your child will complete the course with:

  • A full understanding of maps, map differences and map reading skills
  • Compass skills: taking and following bearings, triangulation
  • Practical experience with map and compass gained by participating in a number of different orienteering activities and exercises
  • Route finding and strategies
  • Relocation techniques
Orienteering skills required to comfortably participate in orienteering, outdoor navigation and adventure race activities

Navigational techniques for Adventure racing (an Introduction Session is included)
This workshop is for youth who have successfully completed the Advanced Wilderness Orienteering training and are eager to gain the right knowledge and skills to successfully navigate and complete any Adventure racing course. In this action-packed workshop with plenty of hands-on experience your child will learn:

  • how to interprete any map
  • the use of a compass, taking a bearing and triangulation
  • relocation - techniques and strategies.
  • course plotting using given UTM coordinates
  • route identification and selection of best strategy 
  • practice your new learned skills in a pre-set course. Maps and compasses will be provided.

This workshop will give your child the skills to succesfully navigate and complete their first Kinex Ultimate Outdoor Adventure Race.
